Decongestant use has no ill effects in pregnancy

Mar 20 (Reuters Health) - Women who take decongestants during pregnancy don't appear to risk having poor outcomes or to be putting their baby at risk for birth defects, a Swedish team reports.

A runny nose during pregnancy -- so-called pregnancy rhinitis -- "is a rather common complaint." Dr. Bengt A. J. Kallen, of the University of Lund, and colleagues write in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. There has been some concern that treating the problem with decongestants may have a negative impact on fetal development.

To investigate, Kallen's group assessed outcomes in 2474 women who had used oral decongestants (mostly phenylpropanolamine) during early pregnancy and 1771 women who were given prescription oral decongestants later in pregnancy.

Americans eating more safely, study finds

Mar 23 (Reuters) - The number of Americans eating risky foods such as undercooked ground beef, raw fish, oysters and runny eggs dropped by a third over a four-year period, according to survey results released on Tuesday.

The survey, made public at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta, led researchers to conclude that media reporting and public health education efforts on risky eating habits and food-borne illnesses may be working.

But people under 18 years old with compromised immune systems were much more likely -- by 21 to 14 percent -- to eat high-risk foods than healthy people of the same age, the survey found, leading researchers to believe they may have to target specific groups for education.

Tomatoes, carrots, greens may lower asthma risk

Mar 20 (Reuters Health) - Women who eat plenty of tomatoes, carrots and leafy greens appear less likely to have asthma, researchers have found.

Though it's uncertain whether the foods are the reason, the findings suggest that some vegetables may protect against adulthood asthma, the researchers report in the medical journal Thorax.

Drinking coffee can lower risk of alcoholic pancreatitis

Mar 20 (HealthCentersOnline) - Scientists from the University of Liverpool recently discovered how coffee consumption can reduce the risk of developing alcohol-related pancreatitis. The research is published in the journal TRENDS in Pharmacological Sciences and Gastroenterology.

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, a hand-sized organ located behind the lower stomach that aids in digestion and energy production. The condition typically causes severe abdominal pain. Alcohol abuse is one of the two leading causes of pancreatitis.

Although scientists were unsure why alcohol triggered pancreatitis, they found that it causes the premature release of digestive enzymes and impacts the small ducts that transport enzymes within the pancreas. As a result, digestive juices leak into surrounding tissues and organs.

Researchers from the Physiological Laboratory and Division of Surgery at the University of Liverpool discovered that, at the cellular level, alcohol and fat can damage specialized structures called mitochondria, disabling the cells. Another group of researchers also studied regarding immune system. Researchers at the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle studied natural killer cells, which attack viruses and cancers, in a study of 114 obese, sedentary women ages 50­75. Among these women who has lost weight at least five times, natural killer cell function dropped 30%. And this weakening effect of the immune system lingers for years,
The researchers from Chieti University in Chiete, Italy looked at 250 obese women. They found that the women whom are yo-yo dieters and had more excess fat around the waist than at the hips ie more apple shaped than pear shaped, were 8X more likely to develop high blood pressure.

"The basic premise is that when you lose the weight, you lose the muscle and the fat, and when you regain the weight, you regain the fat, and it's being distributed in the abdomen. So, it's harder to lose again, and the cycles are going to get longer and longer in between," Stephenie Lucas, MD endocrinologist at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit reports. This regained fat is more easily available to affect cholesterol levels and possibly heart disease or high blood pressure.

A new study indicates that intensive statin therapy may partially reverse plaque build-up in arteries.

The intense statin therapy used in this study resulted in significant regression of atherosclerosis as measured by intravascu¬lar ultrasound (IVUS), a technique in which a tiny ultrasound probe is inserted into the coronary arteries to measure plaque.

The study showed that regression occurred for all three pre-specified IVUS measures of disease burden. The mean baseline LOL cholesterol of 130.4 mg/dL dropped to 60.8 mg/dL in the study patients, a reduction of 53.2%. This is the largest reduction in cholesterol ever observed in a major statin outcome trial. Mean HDL cholesterol (43.1 mg/dL at baseline) increased to 49.0 mg/dL, a 14.7% increase, which was also unprecedented. This study was known by the acronym of ASTEROID (A Study To Evaluate the Effect of Rosuvastatin On Intravascular Ultrasound-Derived Coronary Atheroma Burden Trial). The trial was conducted at 53 community and tertiary care centres in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.

Capsaicin and Cancer Cells

Capsaicin, the component that gives jalapeno peppers their heat, may also kill prostate cancer cells, a new study suggests.


Initial experiments in cancer cells and mice show that capsaicin causes prostate cancer cells to undergo a kind of suicide. Researchers speculate that, in the future, pills containing capsaicin might be used as therapy to prevent prostate cancer's return.

According to their report, capsaicin caused almost 80 percent of prostate cancer cells in the mice to die. In addition, prostate cancer tumors treated with capsaicin were about one-fifth the size of tumors in untreated mice.

"Capsaicin inhibits the growth of human prostate cancer cell in Petri dishes and mice," said lead researcher Dr. H. Phillip Koeffler, director of hematology and oncology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and a professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Based on the findings, Koeffler believe the next step is a trial to see if it works in patients with prostate cancer.
The report appears in the March 15 issue of Cancer Research.

Capsaicin probably has several effects, Koeffler said. Most noticeable is its effect in blocking NF-kappa Beta, a molecular mechanism that promotes cancer cell growth, he noted.

In addition, capsaicin also was effective against leukemia, and might be effective in slowing or preventing the growth of other cancers as well, he added.
But it's still too early to reach for the chili sauce, Koeffler said.
"I am not recommending that people increase their consumption of peppers," he said. "Our calculation is that you would have to eat 10 habanera peppers three times a week, which would be equivalent to the amount of capsaicin we gave to the mice."
The researcher believes capsaicin could someday gain a place in adjuvant prostate cancer therapy. For example, it might be used after prostate surgery to kill cancer cells in patients whose blood PSA levels start to rise, indicating the presence of tumors too small to be seen, he said.

The study does highlight the crossover that can occur between conventional and alternative therapies. "We should take note of herbal medicines and then use modern-day techniques to find what the active compounds are and bring them into clinical trials," Koeffler said.

One expert thinks it's too early to know if capsaicin will ever be an effective prostate cancer treatment, however.
"Since large amounts of capsaicin have never been given to people, we don't know what the side effects might be," cautioned Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer at the American Cancer Society. "We don't know about the right dose or anything."

Lichtenfeld believes that any trial should be done in patients who are not responsive to other standard therapies. "We are ways away from a clinical trial," he said. "We need more basic research before we start treating patients."
Another expert concurred.

"This study does not prove that capsaicin will prove effective in the treatment of prostate cancer in humans," said Dr. David L. Katz, an associate professor of public health and director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine. "Nor does it tell us that eating peppers rich in the substance will help prevent such cancer, or forestall its growth. But it provides a compelling argument for clinical study of capsaicin in human prostate cancer to put these questions to the test."

"This paper should serve to remind us that herbal remedies and pharmacotherapy are often of common origins, differing only in our capacity to identify, purify and package the active ingredients," Katz said. "This work suggests that the conventional medical community should turn a discriminating eye, rather than a jaded eye, toward time-honored herbal treatments. Many will doubtless prove ineffective when put to the test of high-quality research. But some will pass that test, and we must meticulously distinguish between them."

Mar 6 (HealthCentersOnline) - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new prescription medication for the treatment of chronic constipation of unknown origin in adults. The drug, which is called Amitiza (lubiprostone), has a unique chemical type and will be available in capsule form to treat adults with chronic idiopathic constipation.

Chronic idiopathic constipation is difficult or infrequent passage of food product waste (stool) through the anus that cannot be attributed to any known factors such as disease or medication use. It develops gradually and lasts for long periods of time.

Chronic idiopathic constipation is among the most common conditions affecting Americans. Women and people over age 65 are at increased risk for the disorder.

Symptoms of chronic idiopathic constipation include bloating, abdominal discomfort and pain, straining to pass stools and hard stools.

Amitiza increases the secretion of intestinal fluid in the body. This, in turn, helps to ease stool passage and alleviate other symptoms of chronic idiopathic constipation.

The FDA decided to approve the use of Amitiza for chronic idiopathic constipation in adults based on the results of two clinical trials. On average, subjects experienced constipation symptoms for a minimum of six months and fewer than three spontaneous bowel movements a week before participating in the studies.

Subjects who were given Amitiza had more bowel movements in the first week than those who were given placebos. In both studies, the same results were duplicated in three subsequent weeks of therapy. Additionally, three long-term studies demonstrated that the drug reduced abdominal bloating and discomfort as well as the severity of constipation over a six to 12 month period.

According to study participants, nausea, headache, diarrhea, distension and abdominal pain were the most common adverse events experienced with use of Amitiza. It is unknown at this time whether these events were related to use of the drug.

The medication is marketed by both Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Bethesda, MD. and Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Lincolnshire, IL. It should be taken twice daily with food. The FDA recommends that physicians monitor patients who take Amitiza and periodically assess whether continued treatment is necessary.
